Aries-1 Shuttle

Yet another project under way, this being the Moebius 1/48 Aries-1 shuttle seen in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). However, I decided to make this a medical transport, rather than the Pan Am shuttle as depicted in the film. I’m also taking considerable liberties with some of the details and painting.

For example, I’ve redone the landing struts as they are not the most well-molded parts in the kit. I’ve also decided to add mylar and Kaplan foil around the bottom, a type of bunting material seen on the Saturn V 1st stage engine area and SpaceX’s Falcon 9 1st stage engine area (first two photos). I will paint this material white, probably, with some gold mylar covering some instrument boxes. Some truss detail and additional piping will also be added. The idea is to make this area very busy with details.

The other photo shows an example of the parts that ring the lower wall of the cabin. These openings will allow for some blue light to filter into the space. The interior will feature a combination of seats and medical beds, and a lot of medical equipment. I also obtained some 1/48 figures from Max Grueter, which will be converted to medical staff.
