This is a 1/12 scale model of Friendship 7, the Mercury spacecraft that carried astronaut John Glenn into orbit in February 1962. The base kit is from Atomic City, but I ended up ditching most of it - about 90% was replaced with scratchbuilt elements (I retained the kit’s heatshield piece, most of astronaut's couch, the single-piece main capsule shell, and the parachute barrel). A lot of research went into this project; however, I ended up with an innacurate representation of Glenn’s couch (the couch was custom made for each of the six astronauts, and mine reflects what could be called a “generic” or “baseline” version that never got used).
